The Final Post

After further research, I have now come into the conclusion that I do want to pursue this career. I think that I have the personality to be in this field. I've always been the "therapist" within my group of friends since I can remember. I'm always the person they run to when they have problems or whenever they just need someone to listen. Thinking back, I did not even consider actually pursuing this career because my parents have always wanted me to be a doctor. But now that I've grown, I finally realize what I want to do; and that is to help people by being their friend and to see life in a much brighter way.

"You can't do it!"

As I get more and more serious with this profession, there are others who do not believe I can reach it. They think that I do not have the right qualifications and the ability to achieve this dream. But you know, the opinions of others do not really affect me. Surprisingly, their criticism actually gives me motivation to be a psychologist. Because I know that no one can dictate what you can or can't do, only you can.

Inspirations

A few days ago, one of my friends approached me and asked who inspired me to be a clinical psychologist. I had to think long and hard before answering her question. Then I realized, there isn't really specific person. When I was growing up, I've encountered a lot of people who had a rough life. Most of them did not know how to cope with their feelings and thoughts, and some refused to accept that something is wrong. I've seen people deal with problems doing bad habits such as drugs, alcohol and even self-harm. Witnessing all those, I knew from a young age that I had to help people like them. It may take a while, but I know that in the end, all the years I'll spent in school will eventually pay off. I'll be able to finally aid those in need, and be that person that will lift them up when they are down.

Clinical Psychology

Psychology is an industry that has many sub-fields. However, I did not take a long time deciding which one to choose; and that is clinical psychology.

What is clinical psychology? It is the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental disorders, thus making it the biggest sub-field in the psychology industry. The majority of psychology students tend to approach this field more than the other sub-fields due to one major reason. The reason is that the psychologist is able to interact with his/her patient or patients. This can make the patient feel more comfortable and be more open with the psychologist. When the patients can openly converse with the psychologist, it would easier to diagnose the patient and to indicate a proper treatment.

The first time I noticed this sub-field, I was completely drawn in. The feeling of being to help others by just listening is something that anyone would love to feel. It does not matter if the person is a stranger or a friend. As long as you know in you heart that you lift up a heavy burden inside that person is enough.

"Qualifications"

In the psychological field, counseling and clinical work are the occupation I prefer to have. And to obtain either of those careers, I have to be sensitive, have good communication and have the ability to lead and inspire others
Be sensitive to the patient and their problem. It would be quite difficult to do counseling the psychologist would say anything things you want to say. Some words that might come out of the mouth might hurt the patient; and it may make them feel worst. The reason why they are there is so that they will feel better, and not worst.
It's important to communicate with them clearly. As a psychologist, it's necessary to have have the ability to converse with the patient. Most of the time, patients won't necessary ask for advice; they only need someone to listen about their problems and dilemmas. Though their are some who would wish to hear advice, and that's why it's important to have good communication skill. If the psychologist don't know how to answer or give an advice, the patient will be troubled more than he/she is. It seem like no one will ever give them answers, thus can make them feel worst.
And of course, a great psychologist must act like a leader to their patients. They have to set as an example in order for the patients to have the motivation to heal. Most psychologically ill people are looking for others to look up to.
These three qualifications are important to succeed in this field. Though you might not have these characteristic yet, if you surely are passionate for this career, you will eventually develop them.

"Why Psychology?"

At a very young age, the mind has always intrigued me. I always wondered, "Why do they think like that? Why do they act like that? How can they remember that much? How can they forget?". All these questions pilled in my mind as I got older and older. At first, I did not pay attention to facts and did not bother to look more closely about this topic; everything was just out of my curiosity  But then I decided to dig more information about this fascinating thing, and I came into one conclusion; that everything is controlled and worked by the mind.

A lot of my relatives have asked me the reason why I would take Psychology as a major. And quite honestly, in the beginning, it was just because of mere curiosity. I just wanted to be like those mind readers I see in movies and television shows. But now that I am older, I finally figured out a reason why I wanted to take the course; to be a psychotherapist.

A psychotherapist is someone who is trained to treat any mental and emotional problem using psychological methods. I, on the other hand, have a more specific group to help; teenagers. In this generations, suicide is the third leading cause of death among teens and young adults due to depression. A lot of them feel lost and alone in this world, and that is why some decide to end their own lives. To prevent this kind of disaster and devastation in the future, I hope to be a great psychotherapist. A psychotherapist who can prove to the needs that they are not alone, that their are people who cares and people who understand.

What is Psychology?

Psychology is the study of the mind and its behavior. It's name came from the Greek word psyche; meaning "soul" or "mind". In the very early days, psychology started of as part of philosophy and physiology. Up until the late 1800's, when Wilhelm Wundt conducted the very first experimental psych in Germany. Thus is the reason as to why he is considered as the Father of Psychology.

Psychology has a variety of branches now, compare to how it originally started. There are eleven areas in the  field, though all of them revolves around the human brain and it's behavior.
- Abnormal Psychology: This is the study of abnormal behavior. It focuses on finding the treatment for the different kinds of mental disorders.
- Biological Psychology: This is the study of how the mind and it's behavior is affected biologically. Also, this area of psychology is associated with neuroscience.
- Clinical Psychology: This is the area where assessment, diagnosis and treatments occur; thus making it the largest field in psychology.
- Cognitive Psychology: This is the study of the way humans think. Mainly focuses on people's memory, decision-making skills, and problem-solving.
- Comparative Psychology: This is the branch of psychology, which focuses on animal behavior. This research can help scientist understand human psychology.
- Development Psychology: This is the area that looks at human development and growth during their lifespan.
- Forensic Psychology: This area focuses mostly on psychological research and also part of the legal and crime justice research.
- Industrial-Organizational Psychology: This is the field in which they use their research to enhance work performances and usability.
- Personality Psychology: This is the area where scientist look at different elements that make up each individual's personality.
- School Psychology: This is the area that helps children with their emotional, social and academic issues.
- Social Psychology: This is the area where they use scientific methods to study social perception, interaction and influence. This is also the field where they study group behavior, leadership, and aggression.

I hope these information gave you a little more knowledge about psychology. Stay in tune next time to learn more about psychology.

Beginning

Hi readers! So it's my very first post... And I'm going to be completely honest and say that I have no idea what to actually write in this blog. Though you somewhat have a preview of what it's going to be about. Since I was younger, I've always wanted to take psychology as a major. A reason for that is because I've always been fascinated by the mind. I've always wondered how it worked, and why it worked that way. And also, I've always been curious as to why people think the way they do. But anyways, I'll most likely start posting more about psychology as the days go by; I hope you'll be entertained and find interests in it too.
